Pastor John L. McGary was born and raised in northern Maine, where he grew up in a hardworking farming family. School was challenging, and it was not until he was transitioning out of the U.S. Army that he was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia—conditions he had unknowingly fought against for years.

John enlisted in the Army in 1988, served honorably during Operation Desert Storm, and continued his military career in the Army National Guard until 2008. In 1993, while still serving in the Guard, he attended Zion Bible Institute, deepening both his faith and his calling to ministry.

Despite early academic struggles, John possesses an IQ of 168. His heightened ability to identify patterns, connections, and mechanical or scientific processes has strongly shaped his writing. He is known for envisioning complex systems and technologies long before they take a physical form—many of which appear throughout his books. Several scientific concepts he developed have been formally documented in Chicago-style papers published under his name.

A lifelong martial artist, John has studied Kempo, Aikido, Taekwondo, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu, as well as boxing and kickboxing. He has competed in numerous tournaments, including a major international competition where he earned second place among fighters from around the world—the only match he lost being to his foster brother, who trained at the same school.

John is also an ordained minister and a dedicated musician, having written and released over 200 songs. His ministry and music share a central theme:
coming out of the darkness and embracing the grace and forgiveness of God.
His message is simple and heartfelt—no matter how far you feel from God, He still loves you, He still calls you, and like David, we should be quick to repent and return to Him. This conviction lies at the core of everything John creates.
